Baptism at Saint Dunstan’s Episcopal Church
Baptism is the sacrament through which we are welcomed into the life of Christ’s Church. Through water and the Holy Spirit, God claims us as beloved children and joins us to the body of Christ. In baptism, God establishes an unbreakable bond with us and invites us into a new life shaped by grace and belonging.
(Book of Common Prayer, pp. 298, 858) In baptism we share in the new life of the Holy Spirit and the assurance of forgiveness. It is the beginning of a lifelong journey of faith and the foundation for our participation in the life and ministry of the Church. Each person being baptized is sponsored by one or more baptized Christians. For infants and young children, sponsors (often called godparents) speak on their behalf and promise to help guide them in the Christian life. During the service, the whole congregation also promises to support the newly baptized in their life in Christ and renews the Baptismal Covenant together.
When Do Baptisms Take Place?
At Saint Dunstan’s, baptisms take place during worship so that the whole congregation can welcome and support the newly baptized. The Episcopal Church especially encourages baptisms on major feast days such as:
The Baptism of Our Lord
The Easter Vigil
The Day of Pentecost
All Saints’ Day
Baptisms may also be scheduled on other Sundays during the year. If you are hoping to arrange a baptism, we encourage you to reach out early so we can find a time that works well for your family and the parish.
What Should Families Expect?
Before the baptism, you will meet with Fr. Chris to talk about the meaning of baptism and what the service will include. This is also a time to ask questions and talk through practical details. During the service: Parents and sponsors affirm the Baptismal Covenant, the congregation renews these promises together, water is poured over the candidate’s head as they are baptized in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and the newly baptized person is marked with holy oil as a sign that they are sealed by the Holy Spirit and marked as Christ’s own forever Baptism is a joyful moment in the life of the Church, and we look forward to celebrating it with you.
You Are Welcome to Begin Here
You do not need to have everything figured out to explore baptism. Many parents begin asking about baptism because they want their child to grow up knowing they are loved by God and connected to a community of faith. If you have questions, uncertainties, or simply want to learn more, we are glad to talk with you. Baptism is the beginning of a journey, not the end of one.
For Parents and Godparents
Parents and godparents play an important role in a child’s baptism. They promise to help nurture the child’s faith and support them as they grow in the Christian life. Godparents should be baptized Christians who are willing to encourage the child’s faith as they grow. If you have questions about choosing godparents, we are happy to help guide that conversation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to be a member of Saint Dunstan’s to be baptized here?
If you are exploring baptism for yourself or your child, we invite you to begin the conversation with us. We would be glad to talk with you about your questions and next steps.
Can infants, children, and adults all be baptized?
Yes. Baptism is for people of all ages. Whether you are seeking baptism for yourself or your child, we would be glad to help you prepare.
What should someone wear for a baptism?
Many families choose a white baptismal garment or christening gown, though this is not required. Simple, comfortable clothing is perfectly appropriate.
Can family members and friends attend?
Absolutely. Baptism takes place during worship so that the congregation can welcome the newly baptized. Family and friends are warmly invited to be present for this joyful moment.
How far in advance should we schedule a baptism?
We recommend reaching out several weeks in advance so there is time for a conversation and preparation before the baptism.
