Readiness You Can't Borrow

This Sunday's gospel is the story of ten bridesmaids waiting for a bridegroom who runs late. Five brought extra oil and five did not, and when the call came at midnight, the oil could not be shared. Wisdom says she is found by those who get up early to look for her, and Paul tells a grieving church to encourage one another while they wait. Together the readings describe a faith that is tended over time, not borrowed in a hurry.

This Sunday is Consecration Sunday. What we offer is not a transaction with the parish but an act of worship, a decision made between each of us and God about what we will give back from all we have been given. Like the oil in the parable, no one can make that decision for us, and no one can make it for anyone else. When the service ends, we'll gather for a catered luncheon in Daniels Hall, and everyone is invited to stay.
