A Crowd No One Could Count
This Sunday is All Saints. Revelation gives us a crowd too large to count, gathered from every nation and language around the throne. On the mountain, Jesus calls blessed the people the world usually passes over: the poor in spirit, the grieving, the meek, the merciful. And 1 John won't let us push holiness off to some later date. We are God's children now, the letter says, even if what we will be has not yet been revealed.
The saints we remember this Sunday mostly don't have feast days. They taught Sunday school, kept the kitchen running after funerals, sat in the same pew for forty years. During Communion we will read their names aloud, people from this parish and from our own families who shaped our faith without meaning to. Earlier in the same service, a child will be baptized into that same company.
