A Table Already Set
This Sunday, Isaiah sees a feast spread on the mountain for all peoples, rich food and well-aged wine, where God swallows up death and wipes away the tears from every face. Jesus tells of a king whose invited guests can't be bothered to come, so he throws the doors open wider and sends his servants into the streets to invite everyone they meet, until the wedding hall is full. Neither story asks the guests to earn their place. In both, the table is set before anyone arrives, and all that's left is to come and sit down.
Most of us can remember the first time someone saved us a seat. It was rarely anything grand. Maybe it was a wave from across the room at coffee hour, someone sliding down the pew to make room, or a person who remembered your name the second week you came. None of it took much, and it made the difference between visiting a church and belonging to one. A lot of us are still here because of a moment like that. This week, be the one who waves someone over, and save a seat for whoever comes next.
